Honda looks to silence critics with new Accord

The St. Augustine Record -- DETROIT — Honda wants to silence its critics when it rolls out the new Accord this week.

The automaker, chastened for cheapening the Civic compact earlier this year, says that won't happen with the midsize Accord.

It better not. The sedan is up against the toughest competition it's ever seen.

It faces a new Nissan Altima that leads midsize sedans in highway fuel economy at 38 miles per gallon, and a revamped Toyota Camry that has cemented its place as the best-selling car in America. The stylish Hyundai Sonata, the redesigned and lower-priced Volkswagen Passat, and a new, more efficient Chevrolet Malibu also are on sale. And then there's the European-looking Ford Fusion due out in the fall.

"It's certainly a battle royal in the midsize sedan segment," says Sage Marie, a Honda

The Accord is not entry level car, thus, as a 6 cyl. never was "cheap." But one thing that can be said for all Hondas is that they are built to last. May be a thing that's changing now too, but they have been lasting often 20 years and more with well over 200k miles on them.

It seems, it no longer is about the vehicle quality but all about hype, make it for a year or two, hope nothing seriously breaks and then move on to the next hyped model.

I do hope Honda works out the kinks on the Civic. I've driven a 1999 Civic LX for 8 years now, with almost no repairs necessary. I just hit 180,000 miles, and it's still going strong! It's one of the most reliable cars I've owned.

The 2013 Altima has raised the bar for the mid-size segment. Time will tell who can compete with it.
